Goshka Macuga's sculptural installations are complex spatial environments that integrate objects of the most diversified origins: selected works of art of different epochs are made to relate with books, works of handicraft, souvenirs, items from art and science collections. With her process of recontextualization, which is neither chronological nor based on any hierarchies of value and therefore has an unfamiliar, even alienating effect on the viewer, Goshka Macuga is concerned with possibilities of representation as an answer to the traditional practice of separating exhibits into disparate categories (art or science museums, art galleries, curio galleries, libraries etc.) At the same time she questions the classic role allocations in the art world – the artist, the curator, the client, the author and/or creator etc. Beginning on 24th May 2008, this London-based artist will come to terms with German Romanticism, transforming the exhibition rooms of the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery into a landscape of trees, cliffs, crags and life-sized wooden sculptures. Four representatives of the Munich art scene, a curator, a collector, an art critic and a gallery owner, represented in the installation by way of personal objects, will be caught up in this extremely involved process of reflection on art and the art market, identity and authorship.
Goshka Macuga was born in 1967 in Warsaw, Poland; she lives and works in London. She studied at Wojciech Gerson School of Art, Warsaw, Central St. Martin's School of Art, London and at Goldsmith College, London
Goshka Macuga had an exhibition at the Tate Britain in 2007, is taking part in this year's berlin biennale and will be showing some of her works this coming autumn at the Kunsthalle in Basle.
Her exhibition at the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery is accompanied by a special publication.
