As the initial exhibition in the new project space Suzie Q Zurich, the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery was presenting new works of the young Latvian artist Jānis AvotiņŠ. Most of the paintings of Jānis AvotiņŠ (born in 1981) have the presence of the human being as their theme and are marked by the fundamental solitude of human existence. This finds expression, for example, in vague spatial situations in which human figures, for the most part extremely tiny, seem to be trapped in never ending silence and solitude. His paintings are difficult to grasp in the sense that both the figures and their surroundings defy all attempts at clear identification. The ambiguity and vulnerability of modern life are underscored by the blurred contours and the soft and gentle colouration of his paintings. His painting are distinguished both by their subtlety and their perfect craftsmanship and composition. His colours are applied so delicately that the woven structure of the canvas becomes an integral part of the painting, heightening its atmospheric effect. In his new paintings, Jānis AvotiņŠ concerns himself both with the theme of the woman – on show will be works from his series "Women's life" – and with the oval form of the "metaphysical" portrait inspired by the paintings of Roman antiquity and medallions of the Renaissance.
