In substance, "Works In Situ", proposes a supple interrogation into the nature and character of the retrospective condition, through the re-presentation of a selection of projects created, in situ, over the past 40 years. In its material presence, "Works In Situ", is a collection of texts, titles and discursive references that are meant to act as historical prompts, from the time and place of their initial presentations. Gathered all together at the Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, "Works In Situ", becomes, "Works in Situ, A Work in Situ."John Knight, 2008
Since the late 1960s, the American artist John Knight, born in 1945, has been producing works and projects that operate between the poles of architecture, design, art and sculpture, with the accent on the interplay between the material object and its imagined context. John Knight works with a multitude of different media and materials, reinterpreting commonplace objects and readymades and transporting them into an unfamiliar social and spatial context, thus breaking, even reversing, the conventions of representation and perception. John Knight refuses to be pigeonholed – as a conceptual artist, for example.
John Knight's works have been shown in numerous international exhibitions since 1970. Of his exhibitions in Europe, particular mention should be made of his participation in documenta 7 (1982) and the comprehensive presentations of his works at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (1990) and EACC Espai d'Art Contemporani de Castello, Spain (2008). His collaboration with the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery began in the early 1980s.The Exhibition will be accompanied by a special brochure.
