Presented as a selection of both new and recent works that deal with various canonical histories, the various photographs, sculptures, film and video works in Tim Lee's exhibition attempt to create an associative link between specific moments in Russian Constructivism, slapstick comedy, seventies rock music and experimental photography. Referencing figures as diverse as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Neil Young, Alexander Rodchenko, Steve Martin and Public Enemy, the artist's practice is noted for its multilayered, interconnected and complex structure of references and meanings; a response that proves significant in formulating a dialogue with contemporary realities, specifically the relationship between nationalism, ethnicity, art history and vernacular culture.
Implementing the strategies of flipping, spinning, doubling, splitting and cropping, the artist conflates and combines these formal terms across various media in order to produce a double-take effect that might make one reconsider not only the formal terms of what one is looking at, but also the social and cultural terms constructed around that particular moment. By combining the templates of varying artistic entities into one cohesive body of work, the artist seeks to bring about a greater (or askance) knowledge of each precise moment, and to examine how an upending of optical norms might provide the impetus of re-reading, deconstructing and untangling the histories we thought we knew.
Born in Seoul, Korea in 1975, Tim Lee is a Canadian citizen who lives and works in Vancouver. His work is represented in public collections worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The National Gallery of Canada; Collection de Arte Contemporanea Fundacion, Madrid; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Vancouver Art Gallery; and Tate Modern, London. Recent exhibitions include Sliding Doors, Tate Modern, London; All About Laughter, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; New Work/New Acquisitions, Museum of Modern Art, New York; Intertidal, MuHKA Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, Belgium; and Appearances, Musée d'art contemporain, Montréal. Upcoming projects include solo projects at CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco; Presentation House, North Vancouver; and the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston.
