Florian Süssmayr's themes are the urban milieu, rock concerts, football stadia and punk culture. Süssmayr shows cropped views of mass scenarios in which human beings succumb to self-intoxication through alcohol, drugs and music in the vague hope of escaping from the narrow confines and dictates of bourgeois existence, of finding a freedom that is theirs and nobody else's. The artist himself belonged to the punk movement, played in a punk band and knows his way around scene – that alternative, subversive culture in which the male self-image finds expression in inordinate ecstasy and excess. Places, people and feelings together condense into images of subdued colourfulness, their strong emotionality being heightened still further by extreme contrasts of light and dark.
Florian Süssmayr was born in Munich in 1963. His first gallery exhibition, in which he exhibited his "Colour and Football Fields", took place in Zürich in 2003. His works have meanwhile been shown at the Haus der Kunst, Munich, and in Berlin, Cologne and Los Angeles, and are already making their way into international collections.
